Endings and Beginnings

My brain hasn't really been actively working and churning out thoughtful issues for me to put on this blog, so this entry will be another one of those boring general updates on what's going on in my life. How interesting can life get, anyway?

Most important on the list of life-changing events of the past week is my acquisition of a brand new DIY computer with pretty high-end hardware components. Of course being the performance-mad idiot that I've recently become I wanted it to be a lot better but the price was rather staggering. Oh well. The feeling of having one comp all to oneself is amazing. Many many many thanks here to w33mz who helped me so much with the new computer despite all my incessant questions and bugging. I can't thank him enough.

So what I am doing on the new comp now is playing Uru, which is a great game. The graphics are life-like, and the different worlds are so intricately designed that they just knock all the air out of you in their expansive beauty. You have to play it to be awed. I suppose, besides all the insanely clever puzzles that they have, it's really all these new and stunningly beautiful worlds that attract me to the game; they appeal to the child-like wonder you experience when you go to someplace new and you marvel at all the things you've never seen before. I get a new burst of energy every day, playing this game. And there's now Myst IV: Revelation for me to look forward to buying as well.

Ah, but playing aside, there's CA2 coming up in less than a month's time (recently I've come to rather enjoy reminding people of this, I'm not sure why, but I'd better stop before I get into an argument with some sharp instrument that can inflict bodily injury), so alas, it won't be all play and no work this Christmas holidays. I thought MicroB was fun, but there's a frightful pile of stuff to remember. The notes are really deceptively thin.

I was passing by the Toys'R'Us at Tampines Mall yesterday when I saw a FullMetal Alchemist slot machine (you know, one of those where you dump money in and turn a dial and a little plastic ball containing your "prize" rolls out) and naturally my eyes lit up. Notwithstanding the fact that each "prize" costs $3, I inserted nine dollars worth of one-dollar coins and so now I have three FMA figurines sitting on the new comp - Edward, Winry and Envy. I have no regrets about spending so much money, because the figurines are really intricately designed and are so life-like and beautiful. Looking at them makes me want to go back and get some more. That's what's really scary about all this slot machine business; it feels like I'm at a casino and I'm addicted to gambling or something. When I got Envy the first time I was elated, and thought Oh great my luck is good, let's do it again. Then on the second time when I got Winry (which I didn't want) I was disappointed, but then I thought Just one more try, I'm sure to get a good one this time. So some rational part of me was screaming Stop stop are you crazy? A bit disturbing to hear voices in your head.. maybe I'm schizo or something.

And lastly, everyone has Christmas lists on their blog now, so I might as well do that too, since I'm bored.

1. This year I'm super crazy about anime stuff like from FMA or Bleach, so if I can get my hands on a FMA or Bleach calendar to hang on my room wall that would be too good to be true.

2. In terms of books, I hope that Janny Wurts' new book Traitor's Knot comes to Singapore in an affordable (i.e. paperback) edition - the hardcover edition costs US$30 on Amazon!! - before Christmas so I can get that too.

3. Myst IV: Revelation (Of course)

4. That's all, really, I don't have too much I want. But no, I don't expect anyone to buy those abovementioned three items for me, so please don't (I'll probably go get them myself). In fact, what I really want for Christmas is to be surrounded by people I love viz. family, friends (and soft toys, which are not people, but oh well, I love my Horatio Halliwell and Roadkill) and just bask in their company. That would be a really great Christmas, to me.

Happy holidays!
