Going batty

Back to boring old clinical posting stuff. Started off today at NUH for my Medicine posting, and I was actually looking forward to it. For some reason I feel that I've done enough this holidays, and I'm happy with it, so I can't wait to get back to school. Must be the clinics, you'll never see me so enthusiastic if it was going to be lectures all the way.

I think my spirits sort of got dampened during the briefing in the morning. Firstly it was finding out that I am scheduled for a night duty this Wednesday. And the first thing I think of is all the television programmes I'll be missing out on. Secondly it was finding out that the other two CGs got Prof K and Prof T and we got a doctor whose name I've never heard. (That wasn't a major point, but of course I'm somewhat concerned that we get a good tutor. Anyway a friend told me during lunch that she's good, so I'm relieved) Thirdly I was kind of appalled by the bureaucratic tape NUH was stuffing up our noses (ahem, maybe a bit strongly worded) - assessment forms to be handed to tutors after every tutorial, signing all kinds of stuff to make sure that we've actually been doing work, et cetera. I don't know what the tutors think of it, but I think it's a dreadful hassle for students to be asking doctors to sign their forms to show that they've been doing work, when the doctors obviously should be spending their time doing other things, or have better things to do with their time. Oh well.

Despite the bad start things went better after that. After our respective tours of the wards we called our tutor and were given some cases to clerk for tutorial tomorrow. It was at this time that I realised how disgustingly lousy I was at clerking, after not having to think about anything clinical in nature for the last three weeks. I was glad there wasn't a tutor there to scream at my multiple mistakes, and my history-taking was a mess. What was amusing was that I approached the same patient many times to ask him if I could just ask him some questions, and he kept saying he was going to be discharged and refused, so I ended up just talking to him, and it became a full history-taking and examination. Well, I suppose that's a lesson learnt today, that sometimes all it takes is a little chit-chat to get things going.

Anyway we left for lunch at 1 plus, and were actually planning to go home after that, much to the disgust of another group who were assigned to clerk their entire ward (my deepest condolences). And I happily went to watch Batman Begins at Orchard! I've heard about how good it is, and though I never had the intention to watch it the multiple good reviews convinced me that it was worth watching. And so it was. I think I can say it's the best superhero movie I've watched so far, beating Spider-man and X-men and their respective sequels. I can't really explain why, but perhaps it's the darker component of it that appeals to me, and it seems to ground the movie even though some parts tend to get a bit illogical and weird. And the wry humour is so fantastic. Don't we all love Michael Caine with that brilliant British wit.

And Cillian Murphy! I am so in love with Jonathan Crane and Cillian Murphy. But oh well. Cillian makes crazy look sexy with that arrogant calm of his. Brilliant performance. I just wish they could have fleshed out the character a bit more, tell the audience about his motives. The change from brillant psychiatric doctor to mad arrogant scientist sounds promising. Anyway. I read that Mark Hamill is on the shortlist of actors to play the Joker in the sequels (Yes, we're going to see Christian Bale again! Thank goodness.), so may the Force be with him. And we won't see Katie Holmes in the sequels (I might say I'm happy) because Warner Bros doesn't like the fact that her romance pulled attention away from the movie. Hah, she asked for it.

Just as a sidenote, I'm quite appalled by Tom Cruise's behaviour. I used to love him, but not after he started jumping on couches on talk shows. Hello, that's not the way an adult acts, please.

Anyway, wonderful wonderful movie. Best movie of the year, for making me laugh, cry, sit up straight and grit my teeth in suspense, all in 2 hours. Even though I watched it alone (again and again I find that it's actually quite enjoyable to watch a movie alone. It's not like watching it with some other person enhances your viewing pleasure, especially if it's the kind of person who keeps checking his or her phone [sorry for the nasty barb, but this is a big pet peeve of mine]), it was most thoroughly enjoyable, and I walked out of the theatre feeling very pleased. Haha.

I just watched the last three episodes of Lost. Damn cliffhanger season endings. I suppose this means there's going to be a second season, eh? Drat. All that insane watching just for a lousy unsatisfying ending. If I'd known it was going to be this bad I'd have spent my evening watching SEED Destiny Phase 36 instead. Now I'll have to wait till tomorrow to watch it.

Oh, something to add. Just before the movie they showed a trailer of Initial D, and it totally killed my ears with all the tyre-screeching. Don't think I'll be watching that, but maybe I'll download. Mwahaha. ~Kthxbai.
