A very good Friday
Third post, with three parts.
Yesterday (Thursday) I met R in NUS so he could return my portable hard drive that I had lent him for House M.D. and Heroes episodes. I'm such an incorrigible pirate (I hope posting this on my blog doesn't count as evidence or something). I wanted to go to Paragon to try the tea time dessert offer at Shimbashi Soba - $5 for a choice of dessert and a drink from 2.30 to 5.30 p.m. daily - and R accompanied me there, so that was really nice of him because he didn't have to do it. Haha. The dessert offer is really really very worth it, so I'd recommend those who haven't been there to go try; the dessert choices are quite wide in variety and most cost more than $5, and the drinks available are coffee, tea, Japanese ocha and maicha. I had Uguisu Kuzumochi, which is a muahchee-like green tea-flavoured Japanese sweet cake with peanut powder, served with vanilla ice-cream and fruits. R had the Cream Anmitsu, which is probably the best dessert on the menu: Sweet red beans, konnyaku jelly, fruits and sweet cake topped with vanilla ice-cream and served with brown sugar syrup that you can drench decadently over the dessert to up its glycaemic index haha.
R said he enjoyed his dessert, and so did I (the ocha was marvelous as well, it's been so long since I drank such aromatic ocha), and it was so much value for our money too. In all, definitely a great way to spend an afternoon.
Went out with my parents today since it's a public holiday and Dad wasn't working. Lunch was at Thai Express at Raffles Marketplace (Raffles City Shopping Centre); Dad loves the curried soft shell crab with rice there, and we eat there rather often because I have the membership card that gives a 10% discount. I had Phat Thai, which I haven't had for a while either, and it was excellent stuff.
The most decadent thing was, after our lunch we were walking past Kuriya in Raffles Marketplace and found that they also had the same dessert offer from 2.30 to 5.30 p.m. as Shimbashi Soba (apparently they're from the same restaurant group) so my parents decided to go in and have dessert. The dessert offer here is even more value for money than the Shimbashi one because the desserts are larger, more exquisite and also pricier, though some choices are the same. Mom had this soba crepe which had some mango custard inside that was luxurious, a definite must-try. The soba at Kuriya is also hand-made, like at Shimbashi, and Mom got tempted enough to order a Tempura Seiro (tempura prawns and assorted vegetables with cold soba) that we shared among the three of us, since we had just had lunch (yes, how terribly gluttonous). The soba were springy and the sauce lovely; it's also been the longest time since I had such good cold soba, sigh. Pricey, but a real enjoyment.
Alas, that I had no camera to take pictures of the great food.
Went to Parkway Parade later in the evening. Mom wanted to get a new handphone plan because she doesn't have free incoming, and so also got a new phone, the Nokia 6300, using a $50 M1 voucher which decreased the price of the phone by 25%, so that was good. After she got the phone she started complaining about how complicated it was for her to use and she'd probably spoil it by dropping it in soup or something, so she got me to use it instead while she's using my old phone now (can't even remember the model number). Yep, so I have a new phone. It's very nice and sleek and very thin (13 mm only) and the screen is huge. As with every new phone there are annoyances that I have to get used to, like the message tone is so darn soft even at full volume that I can't hear it from the living room when the phone is in my bedroom. And I have to press like three extra buttons to find out when a message was sent to me. How inconvenient. The buttons are kind of small too so I always press adjacent buttons inadvertently. Just have to get used to it I guess.
