Curious blobs
We stayed home for lunch today even though it's Mother's Day; Mom's birthday always falls a week or so before Mother's Day and we end up celebrating both events together for convenience. Not particularly fair to Mom, because then she only gets one special day in place of two, but like they say, every day is Mother's Day if you want it to be. ;D
Anyway Mom had some irresistable urge to do some culinary experimentation, since she has been watching a Taiwanese cooking programme lately that has taught her to cook interesting Taiwan-ish stuff, and she can't wait to try them out on gullible and gluttonous guinea pigs like me.
Today's new experiment was called 面疙瘩, which is something like 面粉果 (a.k.a. mee hoon kuay, the large slab kind of ban mian). Mom first stir-fried some shrimp, egg, mushroom and chicken until fragrant (fried shrimp is
very fragrant) and then added water and mushroom stock to make the soup base. Then she made a bit of dough with flour (duh) and tore bits of dough off to dunk into the boiling soup base. This part got a bit hairy because the dough was too wet (and there was no more flour to put in to make it less wet -__-;) and kept sticking to Mom's hands when she tried to drop them into the soup. Thus, instead of sheetlike dough pieces the dough ended up looking blobby. Haha.
Looks a little icky, actually, and those flour blobs don't really look edible in those photos. But it was a really delicious meal: the dough was soft and chewy with a little springiness, and the soup was just really fragrant because of the mingled fragrances of shrimp, egg and mushroom. The soup was a little bit salty but it helped to make the dough pieces not too bland (because how much taste do you expect flour to have, anyway). I finished one bowl and asked for more heh.
I think Mom's culinary experiment was rather successful (as I said I'm gullible); can't wait for her to make more interesting new stuff.
